Hank Gathers was a promising American basketball player whose career was tragically cut short. He was known for his exceptional rebounding skills, high-energy play, and scoring ability, particularly in the low post. Gathers played college basketball at the University of Southern California (USC) before transferring to Loyola Marymount University (LMU) along with teammate Bo Kimble and coach Paul Westhead.
At LMU, Gathers became a national sensation. He led the nation in scoring and rebounding during the 1988-89 season. Gathers and Kimble led LMU to national attention due to their high-scoring offense. Gathers suffered from a heart condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which was diagnosed after he collapsed during a game in December 1989.
Despite being prescribed medication and cleared to play, Gathers tragically collapsed again during a West Coast Conference tournament game in March 1990 and died. His death sparked considerable debate about the screening and treatment of athletes with heart conditions and the pressures placed on college athletes. His legacy continues to be remembered through the Hank Gathers Award, given annually to the top college basketball scorer in the nation.
